How to Restore the Polish on Furniture

    • 1). Clean the surface of the furniture with a soft cloth rag and a wood cleaner or paint thinner. You can also remove oil, dirt and stains with diluted ammonia. Allow the table to air dry.

    • 2). Apply one to two coats of a wood stain if needed. Buff the wood stain into the surface with steel wool. Wipe clean with a dry soft cloth.

    • 3). Put one to two thin coats of clear finish atop the furniture surface. Use the same type of finish that your furniture originally had (don't put lacquer on top of a varnish finish). You may want to try a test spot first on a hidden place on the furniture to get a preview of results. Allow to air dry.

    • 4). Wipe the entire furniture surface down with a dry fine steel wool. Apply a layer of paste wax to completely restore polish on furniture.
