How to Convert Produce Waste to Compost

    • 1). Purchase or make a home compost bin. Set it outside, in a shady area away from the house.

    • 2). Keep a pile of grass clippings, leaves, small broken twigs and other types of dry brown waste near the compost bin.

    • 3). Collect produce waste in a plastic bucket placed under the kitchen sink.

    • 4). Dump the bucket into the compost bin every few days. Cover the produce with dry leaves and grass from the pile.

    • 5). Turn the pile every two weeks with a pitchfork or shovel. To do this, plunge the pitchfork or shovel into the pile, pull up the deeper compost at the bottom, and mix it with the materials on top. This will accelerate the composting process.

    • 6). Check the texture and color of the compost when you turn it. Once the compost reaches a dark brown color, and looks like soil, it can be used in the garden.
