How to Mulch with Self-Propelled Lawn Mowers

    • 1). Add fuel and oil to the self-propelled mower and follow the normal starting procedure. Adjust the blade height so that only the top 1/3 of the grass blades will be cut.

    • 2). Choose a time to cut and mulch the lawn when the grass is dry. Avoid cutting grass with a mulching mower following a rain or when there is a heavy dew.

    • 3). Position the mower in a corner of the lawn, or along an edge. Insert the plastic plug in the exit chute of the deck, and attach a bag to the rear of the mower if desired. Leave the plug out and bag off the mower if you wish to allow the mulched clippings and debris to be deposited back into the lawn.

    • 4). Start the mower; set the throttle as directed, or choose a setting that produces a comfortable speed behind which you can walk.

    • 5). Guide the self-propelled mower in a straight line across the lawn. Turn the mower and cut across the lawn in the opposite direction, using the first pass as a guide. Allow the wheels of the mower to slightly overlap the first pass to slightly reduce the amount of grass being cut, if desired.
