How to Fertilize a Lawn in the Summer

Things You'll Need

Instructions

1

Select between slow-release or fast-release fertilizer based on the condition and location of your lawn. Slow-release nitrogen fertilizers will yield slower, consistent growth and are generally better for summer application. Fast-release nitrogen fertilizers are for cooler weather regions and will release the nitrogen immediately, causing rapid growth.
2

Spread fertilizer in a right-angle pattern, using a drop or rotary spreader to provide a more even application. For example, start spreading fertilizer north to south across the entire lawn, and then reapply it going east to west.
3

Water the fertilizer on your lawn. Fertilizer left on dry soil may burn established grass.
4

Fertilize the lawn every six weeks, unless the soil is sandy. Fertilize sandy soils every four weeks, but with less fertilizer at each application. The Utah State University Extension notes that the total amount of fertilizer applied over the summer should be the same regardless of the frequency of application.
