- Shrubs are often used as a barrier plants against wind and for natural fencing between properties to provide privacy. In mass plantings, shrubs are used for dividing purposes, to provide balance and to fill empty spaces in flower beds.
- Shrubs vary greatly in size. Small shrubs can be as short as 1 foot tall and can grow up to 4 feet. Medium shrubs grow 4 to 6 feet, and large shrubs grow more than 6 feet.
- Shrubs can be evergreen or deciduous, with leaves that produce colors such as orange, purple, red and bronze. Many shrubs will produce fruits and flowers in colors that include red, white, blue, pink and purple.
- Shrubs are often used as foundation plants. The shrubs are placed at the base of a house to conceal a foundation that may not be covered with facade material such as brick or siding.
- Shrubs can serve as a specimen plant. A shrub with showy attributes can be featured when placed in a landscape where it can be a focal point.
