The Best Times to Grow Crape Myrtles From Cuttings

    Planting Times

    • Crape myrtle is usually propagated either by softwood or hardwood cuttings and planted in the summer or fall, according to the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. Softwood cuttings, which are transplanted in spring, are particularly common for propagation.

    Softwood Cuttings

    • Take softwood cuttings in the growing season of June, July or August, and hardwood cuttings in winter, when the plant is dormant. The University of Georgia Cobb County Extension Service recommends taking pencil-size cuttings 6 to 8 inches in length. Remove leaves halfway up from the bottom so they aren't covered by the rooting medium. Dip cuttings a little more than halfway in rooting hormone and then insert halfway into a rooting medium, such as perlite or peat, six inches apart. Mist regularly or keep the cutting container in a plastic bag to retain moisture. Rooting usually occurs within three to four weeks. Transplant in spring.

    Hardwood Cuttings

    • For hardwood cuttings, the Alabama Cooperative Extension System advises taking cuttings 8 inches in length, 1/2 inch in diameter, in early to mid-November. Stick cuttings in a container with rooting medium, leaving about 1 inch of the cuttings out of the medium. When new growth begins, keep the container in a sunny location and water. Plant outside in late summer or early fall.
