- 1). Find a location in full sun to partial shade as suggested by the U.S. National Arboretum. This plant will tolerate most soil types as long as the soil is moist and well-drained. Avoid placing the shrub at the bottom of slopes that collect water.
- 2). Plant the Alleghany shrub in a hole three times as wide and deep as the root ball. Place a small amount of compost into the hole before placing the root ball into it. Backfill the hole halfway, water the soil deeply to settle it and finish backfilling the hole after the water has drained. Water the plant again deeply until the water puddles on top of the soil.
- 3). Water the shrub's soil deeply during periods of drought and especially during the hot summer months. Place a 2-inch layer of mulch around the shrub to maintain soil moistness.
- 4). Prune the shrub after it flowers to promote the formation of flower buds in the summer of the following bloom season, according to the Colorado State Extension. Remove dead and damaged foliage and blooms as necessary. Clear away debris to prevent fungi or pests.
