Are you in a quandary as to which type of roses you want to grow? Are you confused on which type is best for you? There are so many varieties and breeds to choose from that most types are chosen based upon the purpose (scent, beauty, color or all three,) location, climate, and availability of time spent on caring for your roses. You can trim down your options if you know the different types of roses and what they can provide you with. Acquainting yourself with the different rose varieties allows you to gain the necessary knowhow so that you can now determine what your garden requires and the specific type you want.
The Hybrid Tea Rose type is famous for its perfect flowers and buds. The flower is shaped like a vase, with long buds that are pointed, long stems, and is usually fragrant. They also bloom through the entire flowering season. It is the most famous of all the rose types and you can almost all of the colors associated with roses. They also flower repeatedly if you cut off withered or dead blooms (deadheading). However in areas with harsh winters, they need protection. The rose base is usually exposed so that it is advisable to "underplant" with plants that grow low. It not only makes your rose garden look better but also keeps soil moist and cool.
The largest among the roses is the Grandiflora Rose type. It is a large erect plant with large flowers, which usually grow in clusters and are fragrant as well. Because Grandifloras are big and tall, they need adequate space to grow. They also need winter protection in locations with cold weather. A Grandiflora is a result of crossing Hybrid Tea and Floribunda varieties. The hybrid results in long stems bearing rose flower clusters that are bigger in size.
But if you want the ideal rose type for landscape gardening, the best variety is the Floribunda Rose type. The floribundas are capable of carrying many flowers and they do bloom without let-up. Although the individual flower is not as perfect as a Hybrid Tea, there are so many blooms. Because they grow lower, they are shaped like a bush and are very easy to grow. They are sturdy as well. Some varieties resist the harshness of the winter season. Polyantha Rose type is comparable to Floribunda although the Polyantha is an older variety. It also flowers nonstop throughout the blooming season and is very resistant to diseases. This type of roses is perfect if you want to put them in containers since they grow into low shrubs with lots of smaller flowers and very interesting leaves.
Miniature Roses are small, dense roses that have bushy growth and small foliage and blooms that are proportionate in size. They also flower without let-up, and are hardier than the other rose varieties because they are always cultivated on their own roots. Because of their size, they are ideal for gardens with little space and also for putting into containers. The appeal of the Miniature rose comes from their minute flowers and foliage.
These are but some of the varieties that you have to consider when you would like to choose the type of roses you want to enjoy.
