- 1). Match the tree with the available sunlight. For instance, if the tree is a full-sun tree, plant it where it receives at least six hours of sunlight a day for fastest growth. Planting a tree in a location where it will not receive sufficient light prohibits growth and bloom production.
- 2). Plant your tree in the proper type of soil. Some trees, like the fern pine, prefer soil that is sandy with clay, while others prefer rich soil mixed with limestone. Planting a tree is the soil that is compatible with helps the nutrients absorb faster, increasing growth.

- 6). Fertilize your tree based on the type of tree and the soil needs. Consider having a soil sample taken to determine the type of nutrients your soil is lacking. The North Dakota State University agricultural websites states that deciduous trees generally require fertilizing once every two to three years and evergreens less often.
