- Winter boots are typically made of leather, suede or a similar fabric. Vinegar works well to remove the salt stains without damaging the fabric of the shoe. Mix one cup of warm water with one spoonful of distilled white vinegar in a dish. Do not use other vinegars as they are composed differently and will not have the same effect. Stir to combine ingredients, dip a cloth or cotton ball in the solution and rub it over the salt stains. You should remove the stains with little effort, putting shoes back into their original condition.
- For salt stains on clothing, mix equal parts of water and distilled white vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray directly onto the salt stains, and wipe clean with a cloth or sponge. Repeat as needed until you have entirely removed the stains.
Alternately simply toss the clothing in the washing machine, and add your regular detergent as well as one-half cup of distilled white vinegar. Wash as usual, and you will remove the stains with ease. If clothing is dry clean only, take the garments directly to your local dry cleaners for professional assistance. - You can also remove carpet stains using a 50/50 mix of water and distilled white vinegar. Pour into a spray bottle, and spray directly onto the salt stains. Use a damp cloth to rub away the stains, and repeat as needed until the carpet is cleaned to your satisfaction. This solution works well for both household carpeting and carpeting and floor mats in automobiles.
