- 1). Measure the opening in your fence or otherwise decide on the dimensions for your gate. These instructions assume a gate approximately 48 inches wide by 44 inches tall.
- 2). Cut two pieces of 2x6 lumber to 48 inches in length each. Lay them on a flat surface (driveway, porch) parallel to each other with approximately 32 inches of space in between them.
- 3). Cut six pieces of 1x6 lumber to approximately 44 inches in length (you can make them a bit longer if you want them to extend above the cross pieces). Gently lay your 1x6 slats across your two cross pieces, arranging the spacing between the slats so it is nearly equal (if you want perfection, use a spacer to keep the spacing even).
- 4). Mark both cross pieces on either side of each slat so you know where the slats go. Starting at one end, use screws to attach the slats to the cross pieces.
- 5). Add a diagonal piece of 2x6 from the bottom left corner to the upper right corner to add stability to your gate.
- 6). Add hinges and a latch and your gate is swinging.
