How to Care for Mature Gardenia Bushes

    • 1). Place the gardenia bush in a location where it will receive full sun or dappled shade.

    • 2). Grow gardenia bushes in a warm room that never goes under 65 degrees Fahrenheit at night. During the day, temperatures should remain around 70 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Growing the mature gardenia bushes at the right temperature is vital for the buds to form, and for the plant to flower.

    • 3). Water the gardenia bush regularly. Too much or too little water makes the gardenia struggle. In the summer, place the pot into a container of water and allow the soil to soak up moisture. When the top of the soil is visibly wet, remove the pot and allow it to finish draining on a rack. To test if your gardenia bush needs water, stick your finger into the soil to a depth of 2 inches. If the soil feels dry, give the plant some water. If the soil feels damp, then the soil has enough moisture. Use only soft water or rainwater when watering.

    • 4). Mist the leaves frequently. Gardenias like to grow in humid conditions. Place a humidifier near the plant and/or place a bowl of water beside your plant to increase humidity.

    • 5). Feed the gardenia bush with an acid fertilizer twice a year. Give them fertilizer in spring begins and again in the summer. for indoor gardenias, feed them every other week beginning in the spring and continuing until fall.

    • 6). Examine the leaves for chlorosis. If the leaves turn yellow, they may have chlorosis. Add iron to the potting soil according to label directions. Continue this treatment once or twice a week for one month. Do not allow the pot to sit in water.

    • 7). Inspect the gardenia for aphids or spider mites. Place a white piece of paper under some leaves and tap them. If you see little black or red spots on the paper, you have pests. Spray the gardenia bush with insecticidal soap. Mix and apply according to label directions.

    • 8). Pinch off the tips of the gardenia stems. This helps the stems to grow bushier and have more blossoms next season.
