How to Make an Upholstered Headboard From Insulation Board

    • 1). Measure the width of your bed with a measuring tape. Add 4 inches to the measurement. Decide how high you want your headboard to be and add 2 inches to that measurement. Rub sandpaper over the cut edges of the board to smooth.

    • 2). Lay a piece of 1/4 inch plywood on a flat surface. Draw your calculated measurements onto the board's surface to create the base shape of your headboard. Cut out the shape using a jigsaw.

    • 3). Lay a piece of insulation board on your work surface. Draw your measurements onto a piece of insulation board. Cut the shape out using a hand saw.

    • 4). Spread two layers of high loft quilt batting on top of the insulation board cut out. Trim the edges of the two layers of quilt batting to be even with the sides of the insulation board using a pair of scissors.

    • 5). Lay a piece of fabric on the work surface. Cut the fabric to be 6 inches longer and wider than the dimensions of the headboard. Lay the cut fabric face down on the work surface and smooth out any wrinkles.

    • 6). Place the two layers of batting on top of one another in the center of the fabric. Place the insulation board on top of the batting. Lay the plywood backing on top of the insulation board. Ensure the edges of the batting, insulation board and plywood are even with each other.

    • 7). Pull the top edge of fabric up and over the back of the plywood board. Insert staples every 1 to 2 inches along the fabric edge into the plywood using a staple gun. Pull the bottom edge of fabric up and over the back of the plywood. Stretch the fabric tight and staple it in place as before. Repeat this with the remaining two fabric edges.

    • 8). Locate the studs in the wall behind your bed. Screw the bottom half of one flush mount to a stud on the left side of the wall with an electric screwdriver. Repeat the process on the right side.

    • 9). Hold the headboard up to the wall. Mark the back of the headboard where it rests against the flush mounts on the wall. Position the top half of the flush mounts so they are facing downwards on the headboard in the marked areas. Screw the top half of the two flush mounts to the back of the headboard.

    • 10

Hang the headboard on the wall by the flush mounts. Hold the headboard so the top half of the flush mounts are above the bottom half. Slide the headboard down the wall until you hear the flush mounts click into place.
