Blackberries are considered some of the least challenging berries for the home garden, according to the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service. Home gardeners can choose among the classifications of categories based on flavor like sweetness or tartness, growth habit or size. For the largest berries, choose varieties known for their very large berry growth.

    Kiowa

    • Kiowa blackberries grow on erect plants with an abundance of thorns. Known for their very large berries and vigorous growth, Kiowa blackberries are prized for their sweet flavor that develops during a long ripening period. This cultivar comes highly recommended for home gardeners, according to the North Carolina State University Cooperative Extension Service. Additionally, Kiowa blackberry plants are resistant to orange rust and anthracnose.

    Cheyenne

    • Cheyenne blackberry plants are erect in habit and exhibit thorns. A reliable producer of very large fruit, Cheyenne blackberry plants are vigorous growers that maintain good fruit production throughout the growing season. Blackberries of this cultivar are slightly tart in flavor though prized for resistance to disease. Cheyenne blackberry plants tolerate anthracnose but should be closely observed as a management program may be necessary, according to the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service.

    Triple Crown

    • Triple Crown blackberries are semi-erect, thornless plants. Producing very large fruit, Triple Crown blackberries ripen late in the season. Due to their partially upright growth habit, home growers should consider a trellis for Triple Crown blackberry plants to maintain their typically vigorous growth. Additionally, this plant is susceptible to sunburn so gardeners should maintain optimal conditions to avoid fruit damage. Triple crown blackberries are prized for their "excellent flavor when fully ripe," according to the NC State University Cooperative Extension Service.
