How to Fatten Mealworms

    • 1). Warm the mealworms up enough so that they start to feed. Many people keep mealworms in the refrigerator. This keeps them in a dormant state. If you want them to grow, take the whole lot or several out at a time in order to wake them up. Put them back in the refrigerator the next day.

    • 2). Keep their container filled with bedding made of high-protein grain. Mealworms will consume the bedding you keep for them, eventually turning it into a fine powder that sinks to the bottom of the container. Replace this with fresh grain. Common bedding grains are rolled oats and wheat bran.

    • 3). Add other high-protein foods. Toss in a few pieces of cat or dog kibble, it doesn't have to be ground, the worms will eat off of the chunks just fine. Including poultry feed or brewer's yeast is another method of increasing the worm's size and weight.

    • 4). Monitor the shape of your worms. Eating protein will engage the worms to begin pupating. You will note this by the change in their appearance. Once the worms have pupated their next step in the life cycle is to turn into beetles. You may want to keep the pupae dormant until it is time to feed them to your birds.
