- 1). Complete a hunter education course to obtain a hunting license. This is a state requirement for anyone born after Sept. 1, 1969. Youth hunters are exempt from this restriction if they are accompanied on their hunt by an adult and remain under the adult's direct supervision. Law enforcement officers and active or veteran military can also get exemptions from the hunter education course.
- 2). Purchase the appropriate license. You will need a basic license to "hunt, take, possess or cause to be transported by any other person any wild bird or quadruped," according to the state. If you are hunting turkey or deer, you will also need a big game license. To hunt in a WMA, you will also need to purchase a WMA hunting permit if you are between age 18 and 59.
- 3). Complete the check-in portion of the self-clearing permit if one is required at the WMA where you want to hunt. Carry the check-out portion of the permit with you while you are hunting and fill it out when you are done for the day. Leave the vehicle tag portion of the self-clearing permit on the dashboard of your vehicle while you are hunting.
- 4). Follow the season rules. Each WMA has seasons and regulations that govern what you can hunt and when you can use dogs and bait. Make sure you check the regulations governing the WMA so you know what you can hunt and how.
- 5). Begin your hunt no earlier than 4 a.m. and finish no later than two hours after sunset.
