- 1). Apply the caulk remover to soften existing caulk, making it easier to work with. It's easy to use -- just point the tip towards the caulk line and squeeze the product out onto the caulk. 3M makes a good caulk remover.
- 2). Run your utility knife across softened caulk. Make sure you're using a new blade. Most of the caulk should come out this way.
- 3). If you discover several layers of caulk, you might need to use your needle nose pliers to pull the caulk free. You can also use the tip of the pliers to scrape out any remaining caulk.
- 4). Now, you need to clean the area thoroughly. If there's mildew, apply the bleach solution with a sponge or foam brush, then scrub away the mildew with a brush. Rinse the surface and dry thoroughly with a clean towel.
- 5). Now you're ready to apply a new bead of caulk. Use tub and tile caulk with a fungicide for the longest lasting protection.
