How to Harvest Vegetable Seeds to Save

    Fleshy Fruits and Vegetables

    • 1). Cut open fleshy fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes or cucumbers. Scoop out the seeds.

    • 2). Fill a glass jar with water. Place the seeds and pulp into the glass. Leave the seeds and pulp in the glass for 24 hours to allow the pulp to ferment.

    • 3). Place a filter over the mouth of the jar, and secure the filter with a rubber band. Turn the jar over, and allow the water to drain out. The filter will catch the seeds and pulp.

    • 4). Pick out the seeds. Place them on a paper towel, and allow them to dry.

    • 5). Put the seeds in a paper envelope, and mark the contents and date on the cover. Store the seeds in a cool dry place.

    Seeds in Pods or Husks

    • 1). Allow seeds to mature before picking pods or husks.

    • 2). Hang the pods from twine in a cool dark place to dry. The seeds will rattle in the pods when they are dry.

    • 3). Open the pods, and pick out the seeds.

    • 4). Place the seed in a paper envelope. Mark the envelope's contents and the date with a marker.

    • 5). Place all the envelopes in a brown paper bag. Put the bag in a cool dry location for storage.
