- Both aloes and cacti are considered "succulent plants," or plants that grow in arid areas and can store water. However, aloe plants are found within the aloe genus of the Asphodelaceae family, while cacti belong to several genera within the family Cactaceae.
- The most distinctive feature of cacti are the areoles, from which spines, branches and flowers sprout. No other plant, including aloe, has this feature.
- All cacti are native only to the Americas. Aloes, however, also occur naturally in dry regions within Africa, Asia and Europe, further differentiating them as a category.
