How to Build a Bird or Squirrel House

    • 1). Using a ruler, measure and mark the following rectangular panels: Two 16" x 9 1/4" (sides), one 9 1/4" x 22" (back), one 9 1/4" x 7 3/4" (floor), one 12" x 9 1/4" (roof). Using the handsaw, cut out these panels. (Reference 1) You may want to use the carpenter's square to make your corners precise. (Reference 2)

    • 2). Drill a 3" hole for an entrance in the front panel if this will be a birdhouse or in the side if this will be a squirrel house. Drill four small holes in the floor panel for drainage. (Reference 1)

    • 3). Using the galvanized nails and wood glue (optional), attach the front and back panels to the floor panel. Attach the side pieces to the front, back, and side panels. Make sure that the nails do not stick out. (Reference 2)

    • 4). Sand the inside of the birdhouse and the entrance hole carefully. (Reference 2)

    • 5). Aligning the roof piece, attaching it to the top of the house with the screws, making sure that the screws do not stick out of the wood at all. (Reference 2)

    • 6). Hang the house at least 18 feet off the ground, preferably in a tree, if you wish to attract squirrels. If you wish to attract birds, you may hang the house a little lower.
