How to Grow Lavender in Home Gardens

    • 1). Select a site in your garden for planting the lavender in the spring, after the last frost. The site should get full sun, which is at least eight hours daily, and have well-drained soil. Select a site that is at least 3 feet from any other plants to ensure good air circulation for the lavender.

    • 2). Lay down a 1-inch layer of 1/4-inch wood chip mulch over the planting site. Turn it into the ground at a depth of 8 inches with a garden tiller. Water the plant in its container one hour before you put it in the garden.

    • 3). Mix together a 1/2 cup of equal parts bone meal, composted chicken manure and lime.

    • 4). Dig a hole in the cultivated soil that is as deep as the container and twice as wide. Pour the 1/2 cup of soil amendments into the bottom of the hole and work it into the soil with a hand spade.

    • 5). Remove the lavender from its container and knock all the soil loose from the roots. Lower the plant into the hole in the garden. Fill the hole with soil and water until the soil settles. Space the plants 2 to 3 feet apart, if you are planting more than one.

    • 6). Water the soil around the lavender thoroughly once a week, soaking the soil until it is moist at least 3 inches below the surface.

    • 7). Apply a 2-inch layer of gravel mulch around the base of the plant, but do not let it touch the lavender.

    • 8). Harvest the lavender blooms at any stage. Harvesting of the blossoms is usually enough pruning, but if your plant begins to fall open in the middle, prune it back by 1/3 in the fall using gardening shears.
