- 1). Prepare the planting bed by removing any debris, such as rocks, in the area. Pull the weeds or use an herbicide. Check the herbicide label for how long you must wait after the application to plant.
- 2). Aerate the soil by using a spade or shovel to dig into it to a depth of 6 inches. Turn the soil and use the spade to smash any large dirt clods. Remove any roots or rocks you turn up.
- 3). Enrich the soil with a 3-inch layer of compost or rotted manure. Mix the amendment into the top 6 inches of soil and then rake the soil so that it's smooth and level.
- 4). Plant the seeds in rows, at the depth and width apart listed on the seed packet.
- 5). Use the fine mist setting on your hose to water the seed bed. Keep the soil moist until the seeds sprout and then follow the watering instructions for each type of vegetable.
