Part of making it fun is giving them their own tools and even space to garden in. I love having a bucket and tools ready that are just kid sized, so they can tag along with their own "stuff", while I weed and water my way to a salad.
My criteria is simple; Be cute and eye catching, be useful so the kids can actually help out a little, and most of all be sturdy. There is nothing more frustrating than owning a shovel that bends when picking up a scoop of soil. Why bother with junk? You wouldn't use cheap tools in the garden and neither should your gardening kids.
Check out some of these fun and funky ideas that I found for kids to get into the groove of gardening either alone or with you. Aren't they fun? If you know of something that is a must-have that I missed, please send me an email. Thanks!
