- 1). Clear the ground of debris and weeds before sowing the seed. The ideal germination temperature range for olives is 80 F to 85 F. If your environment does not offer sufficient warmth in early spring, go to Step 2.
- 2). Fill a planter with potting soil. Leave 1/4 inch of space between the rim and the surface to keep water from overflowing when you irrigate the seed.
- 3). Dig a 3/8-inch-deep hole in the ground or in the potting mix.
- 4). Crack the olive pit carefully to avoid smashing the embryo inside. Gently tap it with a hammer or squeeze it with a pliers until the outer shell gives. Your goal is to create a hairline fracture so moisture can reach the embryo to induce its development. Have several pits at hand for you to practice your technique.
- 5). Plant the seed in the hole you made in the ground or potting soil. Backfill it and firm the surface with your fingers. If you plant the seed in a pot, keep it in a warm room. Place it on an electric propagation mat to warm the soil, if necessary.
- 6). Cover the soil above the seed with mulch such as grass clippings, dead leaves or straw.
- 7). Water the seed at planting and keep the soil moist through germination. It may take until the following spring for the seed to sprout. Remove the mulch cover as soon as you see the olive seedling.
