The Germination of Pansies

    • 1). Fill seed-starting plug flats with a commercial seed-starting soil. Water to moisten thoroughly.

    • 2). Sprinkle the pansy seeds over the moist soil. Cover with 1/8 inch of soil. Also, cover the flats with clear plastic or place them in a plastic storage bag.

    • 3). Place the peat pots in a dark location with a temperature of 62 to 68 degrees F to stratify the seeds for three to seven days.

    • 4). Lower the temperate range to 60 degrees F until the pansy seeds sprout. Avoid temperatures above 75 degrees F or the pansy seeds will not germinate. Water the pansy soil so that it remains moist.

    • 5). Place the pansy seeds in a sunny location once they emerge from the soil. Remove them from the clear plastic wrap. Avoid placing the seedlings in direct sunlight. The seedlings prefer cool temperatures between 55 and 65 degrees F.

    • 6). Transplant the pansies into the garden after the threat of frost passes. Select a location that receives bright morning sunlight and filtered afternoon sun. Only plant the seeds when the soil temperature remains above 45 degrees F.
