- Hanging plants add interest to indoor and outdoor living areas. Hanging plants come in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor annuals and perennials. They create a multidimensional visual appeal with their cascading and flowing growth habit. Using indoor hanging plants help to highlight architectural details and the less attractive areas of the room. Hanging plants placed in elevated positions or hung in macramé from the ceiling free the floor space as well.
- The spider plant (Chlorophytum) grows cascading variegated or solid green foliage with smaller plantlets forming at the end of long, flowing runners. The smaller plants easily root if cut and placed in a moist rooting medium. The spider plant is easy to grow and maintain in average indoor temperatures of 50 to 60 degrees. Place it in areas receiving moderate light to low light. The variegated varieties prefer a little stronger light to maintain their variegation. Keep the growing medium moist but not wet.
- Trailing verbena (Verbena hybrid) with both trailing and cascading growth habits blooms with clusters of small flowers. It often grows in window boxes and containers. Under optimal growth conditions with well-drained soil and proper air circulation, trailing verbena blooms prolifically through the summer. Some good varieties of trailing verbena for hanging baskets and retaining walls include Babylon, twilight, wildfire and Aztec. The plants hang as long as 18 inches and come in a range of colors including rose, purple, pink, lavender and white. Trailing verbena grows well in areas of partial shade.
- A trailing, hanging plant, licorice vine (Helichrysum petiolare) grows up to 3 feet in length. The plant comes in varying shades of green colored, felt-like foliage from silver gray to lime and grows best in full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil. Licorice vine is popularly grown in window boxes and hanging baskets. The plant blends in with other plants and is a companion plant for browalia and brachychome. Licorice vine rarely flowers and is primarily grown for its foliage.
