- 1). Plug in and turn on the prefabricated light switch, if your microscope is designed with one. The light switch is a push-button mechanism installed at the base or on the side wall of the microscope body.
- 2). Press your eye into the eye piece so you maintain a frame of visual reference as you adjust the light to avoid under or overexposure.
- 3). Swivel the iris diaphragm to the right to increase the light. Find the iris diaphragm swivel tab -- if your microscope has one -- sticking out from the underside of the stage. The iris diaphragm is a thin, rectangular control that moves back and forth for increasing or decreasing light.
- 4). Twist the dial diaphragm -- if your microscope has one -- in clockwise fashion to enhance the light. Locate the dial diaphragm just underneath the stage. The dial diaphragm is a hand-controlled knob useful for increasing light and/or generating dark fields. It performs the same function as the iris diaphragm.
