- 1). Dig up your bulbs with a garden fork or shovel. The best time to dig is in the fall after growth has stopped, but you may dig them during winter as long as the ground isn't frozen. If you separate the bulbs in winter, don't expect them to bloom for another year.
- 2). Brush the clump of bulbs off with your hands or rinse it off with water to remove excess dirt and get a better look.
- 3). Break apart the different bulbs with your hands. If they are difficult to separate, use a twisting motion but don't cut them apart with a knife.
- 4). Remove the outer scales at the basal plate of the bulb and trim off the foliage from the top. The scales form a fleshy outer layer emanating from the base of the bulb near the roots.
