- 1). Grab a handful of soil in the location where you want to plant your wildflowers. Squeeze the soil to see if it releases water droplets, which indicates that it is clay soil. If water droplets are released, spread 3 to 4 inches of compost over the area and work it into the top 6 inches of soil.
- 2). Spread 3 to 4 inches of builder's sand over the area. Till the builder's sand so that the sand, compost and clay soil are well mixed. Wait two months before testing the pH range, because it will become more alkaline as the clay soil decomposes.
- 3). Dig a 6-inch-deep hole and collect 1/2 cup of soil from the bottom. Follow the directions on the soil pH test. Look at the label of your wildflower packet to check the recommended pH range. Spread lime over soil that is too acidic and sulfur on overly alkaline soil.
- 4). Remove all other vegetation from the area with a shovel. Lift grass, plants and weeds from underneath to remove their roots. Till the soil and smooth out the surface with the back of a rake.
- 5). Separate the seeds into two piles. Pour one pile of seeds into a container with 10 parts sand. Broadcast the seeds by hand. Add the second half of the seeds to the container with another 10 parts sand. Go back over the area and distribute the seeds over bare areas. Water the soil.
