- 1). Watch old movies that feature flappers. "Thoroughly Modern Millie" and "Splendor in the Grass" will be particularly helpful.
- 2). Bob your hair. Well, you don't have to go that far. A bobbed wig is a must, though, if you are unwilling to sacrifice your personal hairdo for a one-night costume. Short hair styled in the classic bob is a definitive look for any self-respecting flapper.
- 3). Put on lots of makeup. Get yourself really dolled up. While you do not have to go for a "sleazy" look, it should be very clear that there is nothing understated about the makeup job. You are intentionally dolling yourself up for a night on the town. Dark eye makeup and red lipstick should both come into play.
- 4). Slip into a slip. This is going to be an essential part of your costume. It should be made to fit a flapper dress of your own. Since your dress will be flying here and there as you dance, having a reliable slip is an essential part of remaining a lady even as you indulge in some flapper fun.
- 5). Choose a sleeveless dress with a short hem. It should be low-waisted or straight. It should hang loosely to allow for easy dancing (and showing off of the knees). Powder your knees with a bit of blush after putting on the dress. Flappers did this occasionally. It accentuated the knees when flappers danced since dresses generally would fly up frequently to reveal a bit of knee and upper leg.
- 6). Grab a cigarette (or faux cigarette), and put it in a fancy cigarette holder. While you should avoid actually ever smoking in costume, this is a proper prop for a true flapper. Think of yourself as a historic flapper. While you enjoy dancing in jazz saloons, smoking helps to ease nerves, pass the time and calm your spirit.
