- 1). Go online or browse your local phone directory to locate charities in Mesa that can legally accept your car and from which you can legally claim a tax deduction. Also, make sure you inquire about their criteria for your car's condition. Catholic Charities and Breast Cancer Society Inc. in Mesa, for example, only accept used or new cars in good running condition. Both charities will pick up your vehicle free of charge.
- 2). Gather your car's documents, such as the title and smog certificate. Car donation charities in some states usually obligate the donor to have the car smogged. Determine the value of your car. Go to the Kelly Blue Book website (see Resources) and enter your car's model information to determine its market value. You will need to know the value for tax purposes. You must document the car donation and its fair market value, according to the IRS.
- 3). Contact the charity you chose and schedule the time and day you want them to come and pick up your vehicle. Make sure to transfer the car title, sign any paperwork and ask for a tax receipt for your records.
- 4). Contact the Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles in Mesa to update your records. Turn in your license plates or transfer them to another car if applicable. Make sure you also contact your car insurance company and have them remove the donated car from your auto insurance.
