New Jersey Driving Test Tips

    Drive Around Town

    • Examiners often take candidates to neighborhood streets for the test. Practice driving in several neighborhoods around your town in the car that you will use for the road test. Familiarity with your car's performance in different terrains and under different weather conditions will help build your confidence and reduce stress and nervousness during the road test. Depending on where you take your test, some road exams require the driver to drive on the highway as well. By practicing in those areas and under different circumstances, you won't be taken by surprise.

    Practice Parallel Parking

    • It usually takes multiple tries to get parallel parking right. The more you practice, the smoother you will be able to execute it on the day of the exam. Practice parallel parking along parked cars on both the left and right sides of the road. Be prepared to parallel park using cones for the road test. Practice in a wide open space, preferably an empty parking lot, using four cones. Place them three feet in front of the car and three feet behind the car. Align them as if you were using a box for the car to park in.

    Practice K Turns

    • New Jersey examiners frequently evaluate the K-turn, also known as the 3-point turn. The K-turn is a method used to quickly turn your car around in the other direction in three turns. First you must come to a complete stop and signal a left turn. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and lift your foot from the brake until the car is almost more than half way to the curb on the other side of the road. Put the car in reverse and turn the wheel all the way to the right. Proceed to back up until the car is straight. Put the car back into drive and continue on your way.

    Practice Hand Over Hand Turns

    • You must become proficient at the hand-over-hand turning method before the driving test. As the title states, the turning method requires you to use one hand to begin the turn and finish with the other. Put your car in park and practice the hand-over-hand method. For the right-hand turn, begin turning the steering wheel to the right. Once your left hand begins to reach the top of the steering wheel, place your right hand across your left hand near its original position and continue turning in the same direction with both hands. Then continue crossing them for as long as you need to for the turn. The left hand turn follows the same concept except vice versa. Once you feel comfortable doing this while parked, drive around town practicing left and right turns until it becomes a normal procedure to you.

    Apply Driving Rules

    • The same driving rules apply whether you take the road test on a course at the Division of Motor Vehicles or a road with regular traffic. Don't become lax. Remember to always come to a complete stop at a stop sign. You could end up failing the test if you roll past the stop sign to get a better view of traffic. First stop before the sign, look both ways and then inch up and wait for traffic to clear before you proceed. Obey yield signs as well, and use common sense when it comes to avoiding pot holes and bad road conditions. Never cross the yellow line to do so or enter another lane unless the examiner tells you to.

    Listen to the Examiner

    • Heed the examiner's advice. If you make a mistake during the test, like parking too far from the curb, the examiner may give you a second chance to correct it. She may also suggest you drive to suit the condition of the road, or to suit traffic. Listen to her advice and follow all instructions. Use common sense, apply your knowledge and showcase your skills. You will pass the test.
