Design Ideas for Kitchens

    Paint

    • The color you paint your kitchen should reflect how you want to feel when you're in the room. For example, yellow is a popular choice for kitchens because it inspires cheerfulness and warmth. Orange also promotes happiness, but achieves this effect less subtly than does yellow. White represents coolness and cleanliness, while green represents freshness. To make your kitchen look bigger, paint the walls a cool color instead of a warm shade.

    Pots and Pans

    • If you have attractive pots and pans, such as copper or cast iron, display them on hooks above a medium-height table or kitchen island. The cookware will be easily within reach and will be the focal point of the kitchen. The table serves as a workspace for food prep, and its design should complement the color of your pots and pans. For example, don't place a dark-brown table beneath black cast-iron pans, because the colors will contrast and look gloomy.

    Spice Rack

    • Buy matching, reusable bottles for your spices and display them in a rack that complements the color of your cabinets. Empty the contents of your old glass or plastic spice bottles into the new containers, and print out a label for each bottle to eliminate confusion about the contents. The spice rack can be affixed to the wall or beneath a cabinet, or stood upright on the counter top. Purchase large salt and pepper shakers or grinders that complement the design of the spice bottles.

    Window Treatments

    • Your window treatments tie the décor of the kitchen together. Bamboo blinds create a natural feel, while bare windows fit the minimalist theme. Curtains that tie at the sides are classic, and sheer fabrics offer privacy yet give the illusion of space. Bring a paint sample when you shop for curtains; this will help you determine which style and color will look best against your walls.
