- 1). Lay a compost screen over the top a wheelbarrow. Use a screen with 1/4-inch openings.
- 2). Place a shovelful of compost on top the screen. Move the screen back and forth sideways, so the compost falls through.
- 3). Return large uncomposted chunks that don't fall through the screen to the compost pile. Add additional compost to the screen and continue sifting until the wheelbarrow is full.
- 4). Mist the compost with water if it's dry. Turn the compost in the wheelbarrow with your hands or a shovel, fully incorporating the water into the mixture. Continue adding water until the compost is as wet as a wrung-out sponge.
- 5). Roll a lawn aerator over the lawn area you are composting. The area punches holes in the lawn, allowing moisture and air circulation to reach the grass roots.
- 6). Sprinkle the wet compost over the lawn. Apply it in a 1/4-inch-thick layer. The nutrients from the compost leech through the aeration holes, reaching the grass roots more quickly.
