- 1). Fill a vase or other container about halfway with lukewarm water. The container should hold enough that the flower stems will sit in about 3 inches of water. A quart size milk jug works well.
- 2). Add 1 ounce of food coloring and 1 tsp. of sugar per pint of water. You choose the color.
- 3). Make a fresh cut with a sharp pair of hand clippers near the bottom of the carnation stem. Cut at a 45-degree angle for maximum uptake of water. Also, cut off any leaves near the bottom so no leaves sit in the water.
- 4). Place the fresh cut carnations in the water and check back in 24 hours. Keep them in the water until they turn the desired color.
- 5). Take the flowers out of the dye water and rinse off the stems. Cut the bottoms of the stems again and put them in fresh, clean water.
