- 1). Remove old canes near the center of the plant by cutting them back to ground level. This pruning allows new healthy branches to grow and provides air circulation. Quince blooms on old wood, so wait until after blooming in early summer to prune them. Pruning them in late winter will sacrifice the flowers for the current season.
- 2). Remove any branches that are weak or diseased. Remove branches that rub against each other or are very crowded. Quince bushes have an upright form so the branches naturally grow almost vertically, but at least 3 to 4 inches between branches is desirable.
- 3). Cut the entire plant back by one-third. Cut the tips of the quince bush back to an outward facing, healthy bud. The buds are triangular bumps where new leaves will form.
