- 1). Place drip irrigation emitters right next to the olive tree trunk. Olive trees are generally bought as dwarf trees and transplanted to garden soil, and the trees typically receive daily irrigation while in the nursery. Therefore, drip irrigation emitters need to be placed particularly close to the tree in order to meet its high water needs.
- 2). Irrigate the trees everyday throughout the summer. As noted, young olive trees in the nursery have substantial water needs, and climates that support olive tree growth tend to have particularly hot summers, so irrigate daily -- especially during the hottest parts of the summer.
- 3). Move the drip irrigation emitter to 2 feet away from the tree trunk and place another emitter on the opposite side, also spaced 2 feet away from the trunk. The olive tree's water needs subside somewhat the older it gets, so moving the drip irrigation emitters away from the tree trunk after the first year's summer will provide for its water needs.
