Extracurricular Activities for Schools

    Sports

    • Sports are some of the extracurricular activities most participated in by students. Not only do they provide physical exercise, they also promotes teamwork. Some of the sports that popular in schools today are basketball, baseball, track, cheerleading, tennis, swimming, volleyball and football. Sports also help children to learn discipline with daily or weekly practices that are necessary to improve the skills of the players and teams. Some students who excel at sports have the opportunity to apply for scholarships when furthering their education.

    Social Clubs

    • Clubs are also an extracurricular activity that can offer benefits. There are clubs for chess, the yearbook, photography, drama, sewing or knitting and the school newspaper, among others. Not every school has all of these clubs, but whatever ones are available provide a social element and help to develop various skills. These types of extracurricular activities can also be helpful when applying to college.

    Music

    • Research has shown that music stimulates the brain by using both hemispheres, and affects the growth of a child's brain academically, emotionally and physically. Many schools have music programs that will teach children to play an instrument as well as participate in a school band or orchestra. Schools sometimes have choirs or singing groups for children to join that offer an outlet for artistic expression and individuality.

    Academic Clubs

    • Academic clubs can help children to excel at certain academic subjects. There are math, chemistry, language clubs, debate team and student government. These are excellent for students who already have an academic ability but also for those who would like to develop further skills in a particular area. Some children are more inclined to sports or music, while others are better at academia. These clubs can also be very beneficial when filling out college applications.
