Whether you're growing plants outdoors in the garden or indoors in pots and trays, they bring both color and nature into your personal space. Growing blooming plants increases both the beauty and pleasure of the experience, but also increases your responsibilities as a gardener. To help flowers grow to their best and largest, follow some simple tips. - Keep your flowering plants in the right location, either indoors or out. All plants require a specific amount and intensity of light, and may suffer without it. Read the label that came with your plant to judge whether it needs full sun (six to eight hours of bright sunlight every day), partial sun or full shade, and satisfy that condition. Most plants won't bloom if they don't get the right amount of sun, and won't grow to their full height without the warmth and energy the sun provides.
- Plants also require specific conditions in regard to soil and nutrition. Flowering plants usually do best in rich, quick-draining soil that retains moisture but doesn't waterlog the plants. Check your plant's soil preferences and satisfy them to give the plant a chance to bloom. When the plant starts to bloom and flower, feed it with a phosphorous-heavy fertilizer to give it more nutrition and resources. Phosphorous specifically encourages blooming and fruiting, and will make blooms both bigger and more colorful.
- Although some plants are drought resistant, no green plant can survive without water. This is especially true during blooming, when plants put most of their resources into producing large, colorful flowers for pollination. Water plants weekly with their preferred amount of moisture to provide for growth. Increase your waterings when plants start to bloom, to give them additional resources for flower production. Too little water leads to stunted plant growth and small, dull flowers. Plants that don't get enough water may not bloom at all, as they're conserving their resources for growth and survival.
