How to Get New Plants From a Lemon Tree

    • 1). Find a healthy lemon tree in your area to take clippings from. This makes your new trees more likely to grow and survive in your local climate.

    • 2). Look for thin, green branches with no fruit on them. Measure down 8 to 10 inches from the tip of the branch and cut it free with sharp garden clippers. Take as many branches as you want to plant.

    • 3). Fill a gallon planting pot with nutrient-rich soil and water it until the water soaks to the bottom.

    • 4). Snip off the leaves, leaving the top three to five in place. Cut the stem at a 45-degree angle 2 inches above your original cut.

    • 5). Poke a hole in the dirt for each branch. Position the stem in the hole and pack the soil in around it until the plant stands on its own.

    • 6). Water the plants as often as necessary to keep the soil moist. Keep the pot in a warm area. Avoid leaving it outdoors in cold temperatures. After one to two months, the plants will grow strong roots. Transplant each to its own pot. Once they've grown taller and strong enough to survive outside, plant them in your yard during the spring.
