How to Prepare a Lettuce Plant from Seed from the Nursery Box Stage

    • 1). Fill the seed trays with seed starter. Water the seed starter until it is moist.

    • 2). Sprinkle three to four seeds in each seed tray and cover them with ¼ inch of seed starter. Plant the lettuce seedlings six weeks before you want to transplant them to the garden.

    • 3). Place the seed trays in a cold frame or in a cool room, such as a garage or a basement. Keep the seed starter moist at all times.

    • 4). Place the lettuce seedlings outside during the day when the weather is about 45 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. The seedlings will be ready for transplant when they are 3 to 5 inches tall.
