Planting Passion Fruit Seeds

    Propagation

    • Passion fruit on the vine

According to Tropicalpermaculture.com, fresh seeds grow most reliably, so the best source is the fruit. Separate six seeds from the pulp of a thoroughly ripe passion fruit and plant them immediately. They will take 10 to 20 days to germinate. If you buy seeds, they will take longer to germinate. If you have older seeds, soak them in warm water before planting or scar them with fine sandpaper.

    Transplanting

    • Passion fruit ready to eat

Once the seedlings are 8 inches tall, you can transplant them. Dig a hole at least twice the size of the root ball and mix the soil with compost. Try not to disturb the root system. Mulch well around the plant. Passion vines need fertile soil, so add a balanced, slow-release fertilizer twice a year.

The vines grow best in well-drained soil but they like a lot of water, especially when they are fruiting. They like full sun and need to be out of the wind. Plant them near a sturdy trellis, fence or similar structure to climb. They can be invasive, so place them away from other plants that you don't want them to disturb. The purple variety can survive an occasional light frost, but both types prefer as much warmth as possible.
