Planting Tips for a Leyland Cypress

    • 1). Plan where you want to plant the cypress saplings. If using them for privacy, choose a place about 3 feet inside your property line. Drive a gardening stake into the ground every 6 feet. This is where you will plant each tree.

    • 2). Pull up the first stake and dig a hole about a 1 1/2 feet wide and 2 to 3 feet deep. Grasp the first sapling firmly by the trunk and wiggle it gently until it pops free of its pot. Gently untangle the root ball a little with your fingers.

    • 3). Put the root ball into the hole and fill the hole with dirt until the roots are covered. Do not cover any of the trunk, as this can cause rot. Water the roots generously.

    • 4). Repeat steps 2 through 3 until all the saplings are planted.

    • 5). Check on the trees and water them every other day. Trim off long branches growing into your yard.
