How to Fix Up Closets

    • 1). Paint the inside of the closet with exterior paint, a paintbrush and paint roller. When selecting paint colors for the closet, remember that light paint colors create an illusion of a larger space, while dark paint colors make a small space appear smaller.

    • 2). Paint both sides of the closet door with interior paint. You may wish to paint the door a different color than the walls to create an added decorative touch.

    • 3). Install a light fixture in the closet according to the manufacturer's directions, as this varies depending on the specific light fixture. Consider installing a fluorescent light fixture, as these require securing to the closet and plugging into electricity.

    • 4). Place a stud finder on the wall and find the stud. Turn on the stud finder and watch for the red blinking light and sound. When you see and hear this, a stud is directly behind the stud finder. Mark the spot with a pencil. Repeat if installing more than one shelf.

    • 5). Measure the width of the closet with a tape measure and write this measurement down. The measurement will be your guide for shelving. Repeat if installing more than one shelf.

    • 6). Place wooden boards on a sturdy, flat and solid surface. Measure the desired width of the shelving for the closet and mark with your pencil. Use a carpenter's square to draw a straight line across the entire width of the board. Repeat for each shelf.

    • 7). Place the skill saw on the line and cut the board. Repeat for each shelf.

    • 8). Mark the area in the closet where you will install shelving with a level and pencil. Place the level on the wall in the closet until the bubbles reach the center. Make a guide for installing the shelf with your pencil by either tracing the level on the top or bottom; this depends on your personal preference. Repeat as needed.

    • 9). Secure shelving brackets to the wall inside the closet. Place the brackets on the marks you created and secure with screws and a drill. Repeat for each shelf.
