How to Make a Lightning Bolt in a Bottle

    • 1). Use scissors to cut a 3-inch-long piece out of a Styrofoam plate.

    • 2). Bend the 3-inch Styrofoam piece in half and attach it to the middle of a pie tin with masking tape. This is what you will use as a handle to lift the pie tin.

    • 3). Place the bottle on the table, open side up. The bottle must have a wide enough opening to balance the pie tin on top of it.

    • 4). Rub the entire Styrofoam plate on either your hair or the wool for about two minutes. This activity charges the Styrofoam with excess electrons.

    • 5). Place the Styrofoam plate on the table. Using the handle, pick up the pie plate and drop it on the Styrofoam from about 1 foot away. You do not want to make any contact with the static electricity yet.

    • 6). Pick the pie plate back up with the handle and rest it on the top of the glass jar. Using one finger, touch the outer edge of the jar and you will feel a shock as the electricity rushes towards your finger.

    • 7). Repeat the process to create more lightning. The more static you create, the larger the bolt will be.
