Garden and lawn enthusiasts spend lots of time and energy working toward ridding their landscape of weeds. Weeds can mix in with grass and be difficult to remove. Other weeds grow flowers and can actually be attractive. But letting those weeds stay can be a mistake as they can be invasive and hurt other plants that grow nearby. - Dandelions commonly grow on people's lawns. They are perennial plants that have strong roots and can survive adverse conditions, so getting rid of them can be tough. The taproot might be as deep as 18 inches. If you don't remove the entire root, the plant can grow back. Dig deep enough to remove the whole root or use a weed killer made for dandelions. Dandelions produce fluffy white blooms that children love.
- Red clover is another flowering weed that is commonly seen on lawns and in fields. This weed is known for its pink or purple blooms and pointed green leaves. Remove red clover by using a fertilizer high in nitrogen.
- St. John's wort is known for its use as an antidepressant or as a sleeping disorder remedy. But this plant is actually a common roadside weed that can become invasive. St. John's wort produces yellow flowers with five petals that bloom all summer long.
- Crabgrass is an invasive weed that commonly appears in lawns. It is very hard to get rid of, but can kill the other grass in your lawn. If your lawn is dense and healthy, crabgrass will be less likely to grow there. Keep crabgrass out of your yard by mowing frequently and fertilizing with nitrogen. Once crabgrass is established, you can get rid of it with herbicides made specifically for the weed.
- Wild mustard is a weed that originated in Europe and has been introduced in the United States. This weed is very invasive and can quickly take over a yard, lot or field that isn't mowed often. Wild mustard produces large, yellow flowers in the springtime. This weed doesn't have deep roots, so pulling it out of the ground is the best way to remove it.
