What is difficult about having nasal diseases like sinusitis, is the discomfort that one feels, such as not being able to breathe properly (and probably sleep too), because of the congestion in the nose. Most of these diseases though, are not that difficult to treat with the following simple home remedies that might also complement your medical treatments:
Remedy #1: Breathe Steam
Why this works:
Nasal congestion is mainly caused by the inflammation of the mucus membranes, resulting in the blockage of mucus in the nose. Breathing steam is a great way to soothe those irritated membranes. As the inflammation is reduced, mucus drains out of the nose.
How:
Boil several cups of water in a pot. Carefully lean over the pot and drape a towel over your head, as well as the pot, to allow no steam to escape. Then breathe the surrounding steam gently for 5 to 10 minutes. Take caution in doing this, so as not to burn your skin and face.
Alternative methods:
Another method is to take a hot shower and breathe the surrounding steam. Or, simply get a cup of any hot drink (coffee, tea, or soup), cup your hands over the top of the cup, and sniff the steam.
Remedy #2: Apply Hot Compress
Why this works:
For tender sinuses, applying moist heat over the sinuses helps relieve the pain, just as how steam helps the sinuses. Comfort from facial pains can be attained by this by relaxing the facial muscles.
How:
If you boiled water to breathe steam, use that water for another home remedy – as a hot compress. Let the water cool until warm then saturate a washcloth with the warm water. Hold the cloth to the sides of your nose, below the eyes, and above the eyebrows, where the sinuses are located, and leave it there until the pain subsides.
Remedy #3: Irrigate the Nose
Why this works:
Irrigating the nose with saltwater facilitates mucus drainage by flushing out stale nasal secretions, and thereby reducing sinusitis symptoms like pain and inflammation. Traces of infectious organisms can also be rinsed out during nasal irrigation.
How:
Use a commercial saline product or make the saline solution on your own by mixing 1 teaspoon of table salt with 2 cups of warm water. You may put a pinch of baking soda to make it less irritating to your sinuses.
Use a neti pot, a small teapot-like device, and fill it with the solution. Lean over a sink and tilt your head to one side. Insert the spout of the pot into the raised nostril and let the solution flow – in that nostril and out the other. Gently blow your nose through both nostrils then repeat the process on the other side.
Remedy #4: Drink Water and Other Fluids
Why this works:
You may not be able to flush a cold out of your system, but drinking plenty of water and other fluids will help in keeping your body hydrated and maintaining the natural moistness of your mucus membranes. Drinking extra fluids, whether hot or cold, like juice, tea, or soup throughout the day dilutes mucus secretions and keeps it flowing. But remember to avoid drinking alcohol, coffee, and caffeinated sodas because these drinks dehydrate your body.
