No we're not talking about watching the Miami Dolphins football team play football in Florida, but we are talking about their namesakes. There are several types of dolphins that live in salt water. These types of dolphins are found in oceans throughout the world and include but aren't limited to the common dolphin, the bottlenose dolphin, the Risso's dolphin, the white-beaked dolphin, and the orca. Yes killer whales (as orca are commonly known) are members of the dolphin family, as are false killer whales, short-finned pilot whales, and the pygmy killer whale. There are actually 32 types of salt-water dolphins, and porpoises are a close relative of the dolphins as well. There are even five types of river dolphins who live in fresh water rather than in salt water.
If you're interested in checking out dolphins Argyll why not take a wildlife watching tour or cruise? There are several tour and cruise providers in the Argyll area that can provide short trips or even day trips to observe dolphins (mostly the bottlenose and common dolphins, although you may be lucky enough to see a Risso's dolphin, killer whale—there is a pod of orca that lives in The Hebrides—or even a white-beaked dolphin). You will probably also see the harbor porpoise as well as many different types of seabirds, white tailed sea eagles, and golden eagles. If you are taking a tour of the Gulf of Corryvreckan you may see Minke whales, porpoises, and basking sharks as well.
Sea.fari Adventures, Sealife Adventures, Craignish Cruises, Coastal Connection, Oban Boats, Scotland Sea Adventures, and Staffa Tours (also known as Gordon Grant Marine Boat Tours) are a few of the many tour and cruise providers that can be found in the Argyll area. There's also a variety of different vessels available, from the purpose built catamaran Sea Leopard II (operated by Craignish Cruises) to the RIBS (rigid inflatable boats) offered by Sea.fari, Coastal Connection, and Staffa Tours. The RIBS are best for wildlife watching tours that don't include the Gulf of Corryvreckan (at least when flood tides are running) as conditions in the gulf can include standing waves, waves of at least 30 feet, and water speeds of 8.5 knots (10 miles per hour).
In summary, if you're interested in seeing several different species of dolphins Argyll, just visit the websites of the tour and cruise providers mentioned above. Pick the tour that suits you and have fun watching the whales, dolphins, birds, and other wildlife on offer throughout the Argyll area.
