Churachandpur Tourism: Visit to the Largest District in Manipur

Churachandpur is the largest district of Manipur state. Another name of this town is Lamka. The word Lamka carries the meaning of a location on the road meeting point. This word is made of two different words, €Lam€ and €Ka€, where Lam has the sense of Path and €Ka€ has the sense of junction. This is in the local language. Churachandpur is famous for its natural beauty and sightseeing. Snow clad mountain peaks of great Himalaya are clearly visible from some of the points located in this town. Location of the Churachandpur town is just at 59 kilometers from state capital Imphal. This town also faced huge and massive attacks of Japanese forces during World War II. Churachandpur also witnessed a dense bombing attempts resulting in great destruction. During the period of British ruling, the transportation was very rare to reach this beautiful place. Some of the transports were on roads and servers some Military purposes but later the state government took some serious initiatives to explore the natural beauty of the area and developed the Churachandpur tourism. Climatic condition of this area is also uncertain and the town can receive a heavier rainfall even in the summer season too. Geographically this town is located in the belt of humidity. Rainy conditions are always present in this area. This town has a lot of accommodation facilities with almost the amenities required by a visitor. During the Deepavali and Mahashivaratri festival, a large crowd gathers here across the country. Local public also participates in the festivals with the special tribal costumes. The festival lasts for three days. During this period, the cultural display of the state exhibit here.

By Air: Imphal airport is the nearest airport to reach Churachandpur, located at 53 kilometers. Buses and Jeeps are available to reach the town. Routine flights from major cities are connected to Imphal airport.

By Rail: No railway station is located at Churachandpur. Nearest railway station is located only at Dimapur which is at 174 kilometers distance from this place.

By Road: Road network is good and National Highway No 150 connects this city with other places of the country. Buses, Tata Sumos and Jeeps are available on reasonable fares to access this place.

Tourist places near Churachandpur

Tonglon Caves- These caves are very old and located at 32 kilometers from the Churachandpur town. No historical evidence is available in support with the dates of construction of these caves but it is believed that the period would have been 6th century. Most of the caves are dedicated to Lord Buddha.

Churachandpur Handicraft Market - This market is the most attractive portion of the Churachandpur tourism. Various tribal costumes, wooden articles, decorative pieces made of Rhino's horns and woolen shawls are some of the famous items of this market. Apart from these, fashion footwear, artificial jewelry, apparel, condiments and dry fruits are also available in this market.
