Metal Bed Pans

The primary advantages of a traditional metal bed pan are stability and re-usability, especially for home use. While patients may find the stainless steel bed pan cold, it is stable when rested upon and smooth against the skin. For those who find it uncomfortable, a cushioned seat for the bed pan may be a good option.

Plastic Bed Pans

With the introduction of plastic bed pans, many hospitals have replaced the traditional metal bed pans. The primary advantage of the plastic bed pan is that it is disposable, and the replacement cost can be passed on to the patient. The flexibility of plastic may pose a problem, however, when a patient's weight presses onto the bed pan, resulting in pinching, spills or other hygiene issues.

Male Urinals

For male patients, whether supine or upright, a urinal provides a better option than the bed pan for simple urination. Urinals constructed of clear plastic allow for the evaluation of both urine color and volume. Check for measurements on the side of the urinal. Seal plastic urinals with screw-on lids to avoid spills or save urine specimen for lab studies.

Female Urinals

While the use of urinals is more difficult for female patients, newer designs are available to reduce leaks and spills. The wider opening allows the urinal to be placed firmly against the skin and angled appropriately to control flow. These plastic urinals provide the same advantages as male urinals, allowing a sealed specimen for further evaluation.
